Many thanks to Scorpion and Frmrpat. It seems that the
entire cause of the problem was the petcock. I took off
the vacuum line from the carb to the petcock, capped the vacuum
nipples, re-adjusted the low-speed mixture and it's
running fine. Thanks again for all the input
